First-ever Daniel Weil exhibition to show in London

The first museum exhibition devoted to the industrial designer Daniel Weil's working life will show at the Design Museum, London, this spring.

"Time Machines: Daniel Weil and the Art of Design" will feature a series of specially created pieces, as well as opening up Weil's sketchbooks and personal archive for the first time in his 30-year career.

Some of Weil's earliest work, such as the famous 1981 Bag Radio, will be on display, alongside projects for brands such as Swatch, United Airlines, Krug, Mothercare and the Pet Shop Boys.

Almost all of Weil's designs, ranging from clocks and cutlery to a chess set, come from simple pencil drawings in one of the hundreds of identical hardback sketchbooks that he has always used as the starting point for designing.

The exhibition will focus on the process of his designs and how a designer thinks and works. The pieces on display, from found objects to finished products, tell a story not of design, but of designing.

Argentinian-born Weil is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and has been one of the partners of Pentagram since 1992. He has worked with brands including Krug, Benetton, Coca-Cola, Grey Goose, and Mont Blanc as well as the Savoy Hotel and the Dorchester in London.

"Time Machines: Daniel Weir and the Art of Design" will run from May 14 - August 31.
