The first Zika cluster at Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive was closed on 9 October after no new cases were reported in the area for two weeks, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a statement on Tuesday (18 October).

NEA will continue to keep the area under close surveillance until 31 October.

Residents are urged to continue eliminating mosquito breeding habitats, as there could still be mild, undiagnosed cases which might lead to further transmission of the virus if there are mosquitoes in the area, NEA said.

The largest cluster in Singapore was first notified on 27 August and a total of 298 Zika cases were reported.

NEA had conducted inspections in residential premises and outdoor areas and destroyed 128 mosquito breeding habitats.

Two active Zika clusters remain - at Ubi Avenue 1 and Jalan Chengkak/Jalan Raya, which were notified last Thursday (13 October) and Monday (17 October), respectively.

Sporadic cases continue to be reported in Singapore, indicating the presence of the Zika virus within the community.

MP Tin Pei Ling, who is the adviser to MacPherson Grassroots Organisations, said, “NEA warns that there could still be asymptomatic or mild, undiagnosed cases in the area. As such, mosquito prevention and control remain key to preventing the transmission of the Zika virus.”
