The body of a fisherman was pulled from the water off Newfoundland's Bonavista Peninsula on Tuesday evening, say police.

Around 5:30 p.m. NT on Tuesday, the RCMP's Clarenville detachment received a report that a fishing boat filled with water had washed up on the shore in Sweet Bay, 80 kilometres from Bonavista.

"The boat belonged to an individual who had gone fishing earlier in the morning and had not returned," says a statement from the RCMP.

The Canadian Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre was brought in, and the body of a 59-year-old man was pulled from the water.

Police say winds at the time were reported as high.

The RCMP are investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is involved.
