Five teenagers in hospital with serious injuries after car smashes into tree in East Kilbride

Four teenagers were thrown from a car and a fifth had to be cut free from the vehicle after it smashed into a tree.

The five males are in hospital with serious injuries following the collision in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, on Sunday night.

Police Scotland said the black Vauxhall Astra appeared to lose control and struck the tree at around 8.55pm.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters removed the trapped casualty from the vehicle, and they were transferred to hospital by air ambulance.

"The remaining four casualties were passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service."

Police Scotland said the 18-year-old driver and two passengers, aged 17 and 18, were taken to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

A 16-year-old passenger was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, while a 15-year-old passenger was transferred to the city's Royal Hospital for Children.

The collision occurred on Crookedshields Highway, near its junction with Crookedshields Road.

Sergeant Stewart Taylor said: "As our enquiries continue, I'd appeal to anyone with information to come forward.

"I'd be particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened, saw the black Astra being driven, or who has dashcam footage from the area around the time."
