SINGAPORE — Is Chelsea too big a problem for the beleaguered Graham Potter?
The former Brighton manager, who have carved out a wondrous resume in lifting unfancied clubs to heights of respectability, was thrusted into the Chelsea managerial role following the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel in September last year.
Here is a young British manager who has instilled exceptional tactical awareness in his Brighton squad of the past three season, lifting the versatile side to their highest-ever English top flight finish last year with their ninth placing.
All signs looked good for the 47-year-old to make the next step to manage a big club in the English Premier League (EPL), and when Chelsea came calling after Tuchel's dismissal, Potter seized his big opportunity.
Since then, however, it has been anything but smooth-sailing for the Blue boss, with Potter winning only eight of his 18 matches in charge.
In the EPL, it has been even grimmer, as Chelsea have won just once in their past eight games, and are languishing in 10th spot, a massive 10 points off a Champions League qualification spot.
Why are the Blues struggling so badly after spending massively on new recruits in the previous transfer window? Is Potter at fault, or has he been handed a dysfunctional squad to begin with?
The manager was being bombarded with disgruntled fans saying that previous Blues owner Roman Abramovich would have already sacked him amid this poor run. It is clear that Potter does not have much more time to convince the fans he is the right person to take Chelsea forward.
