For the last decade, George Clooney and Amal Clooney have cemented their status as one of Hollywood’s most powerful A-list couples.

Previous to meeting Amal (née Alamuddin), George, now 63, was fairly certain he'd never remarry (the Ocean’s Eleven star divorced his first wife, fellow actress Talia Balsam, in 1993).

But in 2013, a mutual friend introduced the two at the actor’s home in Lake Como, Italy. Soon after they began corresponding over email, before going on their first date in October of that year. In April 2014, George proposed to Amal, and they were married in Italy that September. Three years later, the couple welcomed their fraternal twins, Alexander and Ella.

In the years since, the couple has supported each other’s careers and founded The Clooney Foundation for Justice, a nonprofit that provides free legal support to victims of human rights abuses in more than 40 countries worldwide.

Here’s a look back at their fairytale relationship.

July 2013: George and Amal are introduced at his home near Lake Como, Italy.

George and Amal met in the most organic way: through a friend. In a 2018 interview on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, George explained that Amal happened to be in Italy on her way to Cannes, and a mutual friend brought her to his home near Lake Como. As the actor said himself, he didn’t even have to leave his house to meet his wife.

"It's the wildest thing,” he said. “A mutual friend of ours said, 'I'm stopping by and can I bring my friend?' And I was like, 'Of course.' I got a call from my agent who called me and said, 'I met this woman who's coming to your house who you're gonna marry.' The funniest thing was my mom and dad were visiting, so my parents were there, and we just talked and we stayed up all night talking.”

July 2013: They begin exchanging emails.

After their first meeting, George and Amal exchanged emails for weeks. “[Amal] sent some pictures from when she was here, and we were writing each other, emailing, talking, mostly about what was going on in each other’s lives,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017. “And over a period of time, it became clear we were more than just friends.”

October 2013: George and Amal go on their first date in London.

In October 2013, while George was working in London—he was supervising the recording of the score for Monuments Men, his directorial debut—the actor invited Amal to visit him at the city’s historic Abbey Road Studios.

“That was a good first date,” the Oscar-winning actor said. “Then we went for dinner. [Amal] said, ‘Let’s go to this place.’ It was one of those places that was incredibly hip and chic. And when we came out, there were 50 paparazzi there. But she handled it like a champ. Pretty quickly, things escalated once I was in London,” George said.

February 2014: They travel to Africa together.

In early 2014, George and Amal embarked on a trip to Africa—specifically, on a safari in Kenya— together. “Amal loves giraffes; they're her favorite animal,” Clooney told THR. “She went to this place called Giraffe Manor, where the giraffes stick their heads through the windows and kiss you.”

After he returned to L.A., George showed a photo of Amal to Ben Weiss, an actor friend. “I had a picture of her, looking back, smiling at these giraffes,” he said, “And I said, ‘I think I’m going to ask her to marry me.’”

April 28, 2014: George proposes to Amal.

George wasted little time in making good on that statement. On April 28, the actor proposed during a date night at home: George made a pasta dinner for the two of them, then asked Amal to retrieve a candle lighter from a drawer—the place he’d hidden an engagement ring for her.

“I did all the stuff—got down on my knee and did all the things you’re supposed to do,” the actor told THR. “I had a playlist with my Rosemary songs on it [his late aunt was the singer Rosemary Clooney], and I was waiting for this song, ‘Why Shouldn’t I?’ ‘Why shouldn’t I take a chance when romance passes by? / Why shouldn’t I know of love?’ It’s a really good song about why can’t I be in love? And it played, and she’s like, ‘Holy shit!’ And she just kept staring at the ring, going, ‘Oh, my God.’ It was 20 minutes of me on my knee, waiting for her to say yes, because she was so shocked. She only said yes when ‘Goody, Goody’ came on, which isn’t very romantic—it’s kind of mean: ‘So you met someone who set you back on your heels, goody, goody.'”

“My only doubt was if she thought maybe it was too soon,” he continued. “But there was no doubt that we were the right couple and that we were the right team. And we were a team from right off the bat. Immediately, we felt we were just happy, and we have been happy ever since.”

Approximately 100 family members and friends attended the wedding—and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Rome’s former mayor, Walter Zeltroni, presided over the nondenominational wedding. Guests attended three days of parties, followed by a civil ceremony.

“We didn’t tell anybody else that we were going to do it, but eventually somebody figured it out,” Clooney told the outlet. “Oh, my God! Once people got wind of it, it became an event. We took a bus from here to Venice, then we got on a boat, and once we got on the boat, there were so many paparazzi and so many people standing there waiting. We were sitting down in the boat, and I was like, ‘You know what? Why are we hiding? Why are we ducking? We shouldn’t be ashamed of this.’ And we got up and waved.”

It's the one thing in life that I think is the biggest determinant of happiness, and it's the thing you have the least control over. Are you going to meet this person? I was 35 when I met him. It wasn't obvious that it was going to happen for me. And I wasn't willing or excited about the idea of getting married or having a family in the absence of that.”

Then we met and started hiding out in my London flat and very soon it felt like, no matter what happened, I would never want to be with anyone else. I couldn't sleep when we were apart. I have letters from Paul Newman, Walter Cronkite, Gregory Peck. I have them framed. I put them in the house. If it were a text, it would feel different.
