Game of Thrones spin-off series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight has been given a first look as well as casting details.

The show, which marks the franchise's second prequel series after House of the Dragon, was first commissioned by HBO last spring.

A first look image has now been released as filming commences, showing lead star Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters) as knight Ser Duncan the Tall, with Emmerdale's Dexter Sol Ansell set to play squire Egg.

Newly confirmed cast additions include Fargo's Sam Spruell in the role of Maekar Targaryen, True Detective's Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, The Crown's Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Sex Education's Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon and Tiny Beautiful Things' Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle.

It has also been revealed that Lessons in Chemistry's Sarah Adina Smith will direct half of the six episodes.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place a century before Game of Thrones, focusing on "two unlikely heroes" – namely "a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg".

"Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends," the synopsis adds.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the show will premiere in late 2025, while author George RR Martin – who has co-written the show, based on his Dunk and Egg novellas – recently teased that fans can expect a different tone.

"The Hedge Knight will be a lot shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, with a much different tone... but it's still Westeros, so no one is truly safe," he wrote on his blog.

"The show will make its debut next year... and if it does well, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight will follow. By which time I hope to have finished some more Dunk & Egg stories (yes, after I finish The Winds of Winter)."

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight will premiere on HBO in 2025. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
