Gatineau man pleads guilty to fatal shooting in Hull
A Gatineau, Que., man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison over the fatal shooting of a 58-year-old man last year.
Colin Lamarche, 20, pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a firearm for shooting Jano Gravelle in the city's Hull area last July.
He initially faced a first-degree murder charge and was scheduled to appear for a four-day preliminary hearing at the Gatineau courthouse on Monday, when the Crown and defence announced they had reached a plea agreement.
It can now be reported that his associate Isaac Lortie, also 20, was sentenced in June to four and a half years imprisonment after pleading guilty as an accessory after the fact and possession of a restricted firearm without authorization.
New details of shooting emerge
The agreed upon statement of facts reveals new details about the daytime shooting.
The court heard how on July 18 last year emergency services were alerted to a shooting on Montclair Boulevard shortly before 3 p.m.
A construction worker in a nearby building reported hearing an argument in the street and seeing the victim brandish a knife. A man later identified as Lamarche then shot the victim and was seen on surveillance footage fleeing the scene.
Gravelle died in hospital the next day.
Lamarche then contacted his friend Lortie for help, with records showing nearly 40 cellular communications made between the two in the following days. Surveillance footage also showed a black Nissan Sentra driven by Lortie pick up Lamarche.
The pair then bought bleach and dish towels and later disposed of the weapon by dropping it off the Alexandra Bridge into the Ottawa River.
When Lortie was arrested on July 21, police seized a firearm, a high capacity magazine, a retractable knife and $4,420 in cash. He later admitted to manufacturing the seized firearm with a 3D printer at his home.
Lamarche's sentence will not take into account the time he has already spent in custody since his arrest last July.
