SINGAPORE — The People’s Action Party (PAP) team led by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat triumphed over the Workers’ Party team (WP) led by Nicole Seah in the closely watched contest for East Coast GRC at the General Election (GE) on Friday (10 July).

The PAP team won with 53.41 per cent of the vote. Heng’s fellow GRC candidates are Maliki Osman, Tan Kiat How, Cheryl Chan and Jessica Tan.

The other WP candidates for the GRC are Abdul Shariff, Terence Tan, Dylan Ng and Foo Seck Guan. The WP team secured 46.59 per cent of the votes.

Ahead of Nomination Day on 30 June, the PAP kept under wraps regarding its East Coast GRC candidates until its first assistant secretary-general Heng Swee Keat showed up at the 11th hour at the assigned nomination centre.

Seah was contesting the GE for the second time following her campaign during GE2011 as a candidate for the National Solidarity Party (NSP) in Marine Parade GRC.

During a walkabout in Bedok North, WP chief Pritam Singh said the PAP’s decision to field Heng in East Coast reflects the ruling party’s view that the WP has a good slate of candidates in the GRC.
