SINGAPORE — The Workers’ Party (WP) on Thursday (25 June) announced that it will contest in two single-member constituencies (SMCs) and four group representation constituencies (GRCs). In total, the WP will be contesting for 21 seats.

In its first virtual press conference since the General Election was announced, secretary-general Pritam Singh revealed that WP will be contesting Hougang and Punggol West SMCs, and Aljunied, Marine Parade, Sengkang and East Coast GRCs.

Pritam added that WP members and former NCMPs Gerald Giam and Leon Perera will stand in Aljunied GRC, while Dennis Tan will contest in Hougang SMC.

To a question from the media about the party contesting in fewer wards for this election, Pritam said, “We have put the best candidates that we can find forward. We want them to represent Singapore and represent... well. If we can find more candidates who are better, of course we can consider fielding (for) more seats but I think it's important for us to focus our efforts and ensure that the candidates that we put forward can do well for the Workers’ Party.”

On his first election as WP’s chief, Pritam said, “This is the first election for me secretary-general but I participated in two general elections and two by-elections in various capacities. At every election, the Workers’ Party fights hard and seeks to persuade Singaporeans to cast their vote, make their vote count and cast it for the Workers’ Party.

“That is because we want to serve as a credible opposition in Parliament. And that means bringing a rational and responsible debate into Parliament, which will represent the interests of all Singaporeans.”

In the same session, party chair Sylvia Lim announced four candidates from the party who will be contesting the upcoming polls: Nicole Seah, 33; Muhammad Azhar Abdul Latip, 33; Louis Chua Kheng Wee, 33; and Yee Jenn Jong, 55.

Pritam also announced that the party’s former chief Low Thia Khiang, fellow Aljunied GRC Member of Parliament (MP) Chen Show Mao and Hougang SMC MP Png Eng Huat will not be standing for the election.
