Gen Z has officially discovered the 3-ingredient bread that went mega viral in 2013

It seems many Gen Z creators have finally discovered the three-ingredient bread recipe that went viral 10 years ago.

On Aug. 6, TikTok creator EtzooCrew (@etzoocrew) posted a video in which they bake what’s known as “ice cream bread.”

“The Internet just told me to put ice cream, flour and baking powder in a baking dish with sprinkles on top and put it in the oven at 350 [Fahrenheit] for 45 minutes. Let’s see what happens,” they say.

After 45 minutes, EtzooCrew pulls out a fully risen loaf of bread.

“I just turned ice cream into bread,” they add.

According to The State Journal-Register via Jeanne Ambrose, a former Taste of Home editor, the recipe “was first submitted by a South Carolina reader to the Greendale, Wis.-based magazine in 2006. It was published in 2008 in Cooking for Two, a sister publication.”

‘Is this legal I am so deeply confused but also fascinated’

Within two days of posting, EtzooCrew’s video garnered more than 11.6 million views and 1.7 million likes. Based on the comments, many creators are both “deeply confused” and “fascinated” by this recipe.

“How does it taste someone tell me,” @savannaheiland1 commented.

“WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THIS,” @sahana.muth007 wrote.

“Is this legal I am so deeply confused but also fascinated,” @e.millii asked.

Other creators have tried their hands at the viral bread, too.

The science behind ice cream bread

In January, a cooking creator on TikTok who goes by the name Half Batch Baking (@half_batch_baking) broke down the science behind ice cream bread and why two ingredients are all it requires.

“It’s commonly comprised of two ingredients, ice cream and flour,” the TikToker explains. “It isn’t surprising how this works as ice cream is milk, sugar and eggs, which are common ingredients in quick breads and sweet rolls.”

Half Batch Baking explains that water and milk, when mixed with flour, “hydrates the two proteins and flour contributing to the formation of gluten.” To “stretch the strands of gluten,” you then knead the dough to achieve a “light, spongy texture.”

“Ice cream ingredients vary, so you’re probably gonna have different textures,” they add before experimenting with a low-fat versus full-fat ice cream.

Choosing a more flavorful ice cream, according to Half Batch Baking, will help enhance the overall taste of the bread. Add-ins like sprinkles or chocolate chips can also further punch up the bread’s flavor.
