The Gentlemen's Kaya Scodelario talks meaning behind Susie's changing wardrobe

The Gentlemen star Kaya Scodelario has opened up about the meaning behind her character Susie Glass's changing wardrobe on the show.

The actress takes on the role of the drug baron in the new Netflix series from Guy Ritchie, which is a spin-off of his own 2019 movie.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Scodelario explained how, while growing up, she was always terrified of her friends' mothers, with her character Susie falling into that category.

"As soon as I read her on the page, I felt she was very still. And when I grew up, my friend's parents, the ones that I was the most scared of were the mums. Like they were the ones you didn't mess with," she said.

"They knew what was going on. It may have been the dads that were out doing the dodgy stuff, but it was the women that knew everything that was actually happening and kept the ship sailing.

"And I think Susie is that. She's still. She's an observer. She's a chameleon. She'll slip into these different worlds, and that's what she's very good at."

Elaborating on how the costumes reflect Susie's multi-faceted aspect, the actress noted: "When you see her at the manor house, she's wearing tweed and she's wearing kind of gentlemanly country clothes and you see her in London in the boxing gym and she's a little bit edgier. She's got a trench coat on.

"She slips into these different characters because she wants everyone to feel very safe around her," Scodelario added. "When actually she kind of knows exactly what's going on all the time."

During the chat, the actress also spoke about working with Ritchie, explaining that the director had a tendency to change "everything at the last minute".

The Gentlemen is available to watch on Netflix now.
