Ghosts star Kiell Smith-Bynoe has shared his surprise at his show losing out to a "f**kin' spin-off" at the National Television Awards.

The BBC series, which also stars Charlotte Ritchie, Lolly Adefope and Jim Howick, was nominated for Best Comedy at the NTAs on Tuesday night (September 5), competing against Ted Lasso, Young Sheldon and Brassic.

However, Young Sheldon, a spin-off of US sitcom The Big Bang Theory, was ultimately crowned the winner.

Smith-Bynoe, who plays Mike Cooper in Ghosts, was quick to express his surprise about the result on Twitter/X after the ceremony ended, writing: "Wait what. I thought we'd lose to Ted Lasso not a f**kin spin off."

Ghosts, which follows a young couple as they navigate sharing their country house with group of ghosts from various historical periods, is set to bow out with its upcoming fifth instalment.

The sitcom's creative team – Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond – announced the news via social media earlier this year.

"After five incredible years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided that the time is right to let our beloved sitcom Ghosts rest in peace," they wrote.

"We have just wrapped filming on our fifth and final series and we can't wait to share it with you all later this year.

"We could never have imagined the reception the show has enjoyed, or the fun we have had making it, and we would like to thank our amazing cast and crew as well as everyone at BBC Comedy, BBC1 and Monumental Television for their tireless support."

Ghosts airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
