Almost two years after her father was gunned down as he drove along a Birmingham, Ala., road with two of his young children, his now-4-year-old daughter has died from injuries sustained in an accident that resulted from the shooting.

Four-year-old Madison Grace Davis died in June, her family confirmed on a GoFundMe last week.

Her relative, Tiffany Davis, said on the fundraising page that Madison had “suffered from a traumatic brain injury” in the accident.

“Despite her incredible strength and courageous battle, she has now left us, and our hearts are shattered,” Davis wrote.

Madison’s father, Demarkus Etwan Moss, Sr., was driving with his children along Arkadelphia Road shortly before 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, when someone in a nearby car “began firing shots into his vehicle,” Birmingham police said in a press release at the time.

Struck by gunfire, Moss kept driving the distance about half a mile before colliding into another vehicle.

Responding officers arrived on the scene to find Moss slumped over the wheel, “suffering from an apparent gunshot wound," the release states.

Moss — who was targeted in the shooting — was pronounced dead at the scene, per police.

First responders found his then two-year-old daughter, Madison, “unresponsive,” per police.

In an email to PEOPLE, Officer Truman Fitzgerald says that Madison was not shot and that “her fatal injuries came from the accident.”

Her infant brother was not seriously injured in the crash.

Madison and injured occupants in the other vehicle were rushed to various hospitals.

Madison was subsequently released from the hospital and later readmitted due to complications, AL.com reported.

After the accident, the little girl never talked or walked again, per the outlet.

An online tribute to Moss said that he had four children and went by the nickname “Bobo.”

“I pray for the kids to be ok after all this,” one person commented on the page.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates of the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirms to PEOPLE that Madison died Tuesday, June 25 at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. The cause and manner of her death has not yet been confirmed.

Following the shooting, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin went on social media, AL.com reported, pleading for leads in the unsolved case.

“I’m tired of these cowards hurting our children," the mayor wrote. "Enough.”

Nearly two years later, police tell PEOPLE they still have no suspects in the fatal shooting, which remains an open investigation.
