'Gladiator 2' trailer: Release date for Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington movie — and where to watch Russell Crowe's original 'Gladiator'

Everything we know about Ridley Scott's upcoming epic

The newly released trailer for Gladiator 2 gives us the first look at Ridley Scott's follow-up to the 2000 film, which starred Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. It's already one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.

Gladiator stars Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi return for Gladiator 2. New cast members include Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn and Denzel Washington.

Set 20 years after the original film, Gladiator 2 is set to be as exciting as the original film, largely credited for reinvigorating the genre of historical epics.

"Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome," the official synopsis for the film reads. "Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius [played by Mescal] is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist."

"With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honour to return the glory of Rome to its people."

Gladiator 2 will be arriving in theatres this fall, on November 22.

While Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix will be stepping aside for Gladiator 2, Connie Nielsen returns to the role of Lucilla for the upcoming film, and Derek Jacobi will play Gracchus again.

Gladiator 2 stars include Paul Mescal as Lucius, Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius, Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta, Denzel Washington as Macrinus, and Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla.

While many people soaked up the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon last year, watching the films Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day, something similar could happen in November.

Gladiator 2 and Wicked are both being released in theatres on Nov. 22, which means another double feature movie experience could be in our future — for better of worse.
