The BBC has released the first trailer for its upcoming Gladiators reboot.

The game show, which originally aired on ITV between 1992 and 2000 before a brief revival on Sky in the late 2000s, is set to move to the BBC for a new 11-episode series early next year.

The trailer offers fans a sneak peek at the contestants set to go head-to-head against a group of elite athletes and bodybuilders known as 'The Gladiators'.

The competitors will take part in a series of speed and strength challenges, all under the watchful guidance of hosts Bradley Walsh and his son Barney.

The revival will include brand-new games alongside returning classics such as Duel and Hang Tough, which will culminate at the end of each episode with fan favourite challenge The Eliminator.

A new 16 member line-up was confirmed earlier in the year, though two of the gladiators had to step away from filming due to injuries.

Former pro gymnast Ella-Mae Rayner, aka Comet, "sustained a severe foot injury" while filming one of games.

"Multiple scans and X-rays later I found out that I had broken my ankle and foot in multiple places, including the talus and something known as a lisfranc injury, ruptured 3 ligaments and dislocated a bone," she shared on Instagram back in June.

Meanwhile, Sheli McCoy, aka Sabre, was left on crutches after she tore her hamstring during filming.

"The rehabilitation process is underway and going very well to date, with a lot of continued guidance from our fantastic physio Alfie," she wrote on Instagram.

At the time, the BBC released a statement reassuring viewers that the safety and health of all Gladiators cast and crew is being prioritised.

It reads: "The health and well-being of all Gladiators, contenders and crew is of paramount importance.

"Gladiators is one of the toughest and most physically demanding programmes on TV and due to the high-impact nature of the show it is not unusual for those competing to suffer injuries.

"In each instance, as soon as it became apparent that a potential injury had occurred, the correct protocol was immediately followed."

Gladiators will air on BBC One and iPlayer in January 2024.
