Former Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt’s boyfriend Scott Dobinson has explained why he cannot propose to his girlfriend right after she announced her pregnancy.

The pair met about 15 years ago, and have been together for the last four. But Dobinson believes that if he proposes now, everyone will assume he is only doing it because she is pregnant.

Appearing on their podcast Scarlett Moffatt Wants to Believe, he said: "Now I can't physically ask her to marry me now because you're pregnant – people (will say) like 'it's a cop out'."

Scott said that his social media has been flooded with comments from people telling him to propose to Scarlett or asking him when he will be putting a ring on it.

He also said that he believes many couples get married once they have their first child after previously deciding not to and is annoyed with all the judgemental comments about people who choose to go down that path.

"That really annoys me, when people have a child, then get married because they want to because they've got a family or whatever, because 'this is perfect'.

"There's some (other) people where (they'll say) 'they've only done it because they've had a kid and they feel like they have to.' No, they wanted to," he said.

He also added that just because someone chooses to not get married immediately doesn’t mean that they don’t love their significant other.

"It's really annoying, just because you haven't got a ring on someone's finger or married them – there's many reasons. At the minute, whenever I post anything on my social media or Scarlett's, guaranteed most comments is ‘Oh, lovely, now put a ring on it'," he said.

"The thing is, they don't know – I might not even be religious, I might not believe in marriage. They don't ask them questions, they say 'put a ring on it before you lose it'.

"What? So because I'm not going to ask you to marry me, you're going to walk away and go 'someone will put a ring on it.' The world isn't Beyoncé – get over it," he added.

Gogglebox airs on Friday nights at 9pm on Channel 4 and streams on All4.
