"The Golden Era" represents Hong Kong at Oscars

19 Sep – Ann Hui's upcoming biopic, "The Golden Era", has recently been selected to represent Hong Kong for the 87th Academy Awards' Best Foreign Film category.

According to Mingpao News, previously, the Hong Kong Motion Pictures Industry Association provided a list of films that were deemed fitting for the Oscars. While the committee members also supported films such as "Rigor Mortis", "Aberdeen", "The Midnight After" and "Overheard 3", in the end, "The Golden Era" received the most votes to become Hong Kong's representative film.

In response to the good news, director Ann Hui, who appeared at a charity premiere of the movie to raise fund for the Lang Lang Foundation, said that she was very happy and felt very honoured to be given such trust from the film board to compete with other great films around the globe.

Asked if she has informed lead star Tang Wei about the selection, Ann said that the actress has been told about it by the distribution company, though she hoped to be able to gather all the cast and crew again to celebrate the good news.

Last year, Wong Kar Wai's "The Grandmaster" was chosen as Hong Kong's representative film. Though it did not get through to the final nomination, the movie's cinematographer and costume designer, Phillip Le Sourde and William Chan Suk Ping, were both nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design respectively.

Meanwhile, "The Golden Era", which chronicles the life of celebrated Chinese female writer Xiao Hong, has been scheduled for release on 1 October.
