What Golden Globe winner Emma Stone had to ‘unlearn’ for ‘Poor Things’

Emma Stone enjoyed a celebratory night Sunday at the 2024 Golden Globes.

The Hollywood star took home the prize for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in “Poor Things,” which also took home the award for Best Picture – Comedy or Musical. Stone said she had to do a lot of “unlearning” to find her character, Bella Baxter.

“She was a character unlike anything I’ve ever played or read or seen before,” Stone told The Daily News moments after her acceptance speech.

“It was about unlearning more than tapping into things from my past, which was really beautiful and very freeing.”

Stone plays a grown woman with the brain of an infant — literally — which she says required her to mentally deconstruct norms.

“I think just in general the kind of societal things you grow up with around judgment of your body, judgment of other people, shame, and all kinds of aspects of yourself,” she told The News. “Restarting from scratch, that was a very inspiring part of Bella and a difficult thing to sort of strip away but also extremely freeing.”

During the Jan. 7 awards show, Stone said her performance made her “look at life differently.” Half-jokingly referring to the film as a “rom-com,” she said Bella “falls in love with life itself rather than a person.”

“She has stayed with me deeply, so this means the world to me.”

And Stone wasn’t the only one ecstatic about the big win. Fellow nominee Jennifer Lawrence as well as Taylor Swift were seen in the audience cheering on their friend with a standing ovation.

Stone defeated Lawrence (“No Hard Feelings”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Natalie Portman (“May-December”), and Alma Pöysti (“Fallen Leaves”).
