This 'Gram's for hire! Courteney Cox recreates her 'Dancing in the Dark' dance for the kids

Can't start a fire without a spark.

In 1984, Courteney Cox got pulled onstage in the video for Bruce Springsteen's biggest, poppiest hit, "Dancing in the Dark." Now, 40 years later, she's showing she's still got the moves.

Cox posted a clip to social media responding to the prompt, "Asking my mom how she danced in the '80s."

To be fair, all moms were killing it on the dance floor in the '80s. It was the '80s, when even New Jersey's own The Boss busted out a two-step.

Cox at first plays it coy, waving her hands in the air like she really did care, before ripping off her sweater to reveal the same, or a similar, "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band" T-shirt she wore in the original video and getting her dance on in the dark.

Directed by ... wait, Brian De Palma? The "Dancing in the Dark" video was shot over two nights in the Saint Paul Civic Center in St. Paul, Minn. De Palma has asked the rocker too pull out a young lady from the crowd to dance with him onstage, and Springsteen just assumed she was a fan. He learned afterwards, however, that Cox was an actress who was chosen from a casting call in New York.

The then-20-year-old Cox was still very green, having only done "two days on a soap opera and a New York telephone ad," as she recalled in 2017. For the video, she and two other actresses had filmed a whole little narrative around going to the concert, and out of the three, one of them was going to be picked out of the audience by Springsteen. Cox hoped it wouldn't be her.

"I did not want to be the one — I don't want to dance in front of 30,000 people," she explained. But it's a good thing she was the one as that video opened a lot of doors for Cox, who joked that the beginning of her career was, "What is Bruce Springsteen really like?" before it became "What is Michael J. Fox really like?" (she played his girlfriend Lauren Miller on Family Ties) and then, "What is Jennifer Aniston really like?"
