I Am Maximus won a thrilling renewal of the Grand National as Paul Townend and Willie Mullins continued their domination of the National Hunt scene.

The pair, who combined to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham last month, added Aintree success to their prolific partnership, beating Delta Work, Minella Indo and Galvin.

Corach Rambler had gone into the race looking to emulate greats such as Red Rum and Tiger Roll by winning in successive years but unseated his rider Derek Fox at the very first fence.

Earlier on the card, there was Grade 1 glory for Gordon Elliott as the highly-regarded Brighterdaysahead stepped out of mares’ company to win the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle.

Dan Skelton enjoyed victory in the opening William Hill Handicap Hurdle with Gwennie May Boy, while Strong Leader delivered for Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen in the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle.
