Grey's Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis has teased what audiences can expect from actress Ellen Pompeo's return this season.

The hit ABC medical drama returns to screens in the US this month with season 20, which promises Pompeo back as Meredith Grey after bowing out as a main cast member in season 19.

In an interview with Deadline, Marinis, who has taken over from long-standing Grey's showrunner Krista Vernoff this season, revealed just how much of Meredith fans will see.

Asked about how many episodes Pompeo is set to star in, Marinis replied: "I can’t answer that question definitively for now, but I think you’ll be excited to see her in the episodes that she’s in."

The publication reports that the original protagonist is expected to appear in at least four episodes of season 20, with Pompeo still providing the voiceover for all episodes.

Fellow Grey's star Debbie Allen previously confirmed her co-star was back for two, telling TVLine: "She's in the first episode, and she's in the one I'm going to direct."

Asked what the future holds for the Meredith Grey actress and the series, Marinis confirmed that she will always be a "huge part of the show" and that there remains an "open door policy" with her.

"When she is able to be here, we welcome her with open arms," she says. "We work with her schedule, she still does the voiceover.

"She was a huge part of the premiere for me, she and I have a great relationship. She’s constantly in my head, her voice. She cares very deeply for the show and even in the episodes that she’s not in, she’s interested to know what’s happening.

"So, you’ll see her come and go and she will always remain a very important part to the show."

Season 20 also sees two additional familiar faces returning to the series after time away.

Actress Jessica Capshaw will reprise her role as pediatric surgeon Arizona Robbins, who left the show in 2018 after 10 seasons. Her character exited at the end of season 14 deciding to move to New York so that daughter Sofia could be closer to both of her parents.

Actor Alex Landi is also back as Dr Nico Kim, who hasn't been seen since the end of season 18, following his breakup with Dr Levi Schmitt.

Grey's Anatomy season 20 and Station 19's final season will premiere on March 14, 2024 on ABC in the US. Both shows stream on Disney+ in the UK.
