Only Murders in the Building spoilers follow.

Only Murders in the Building show boss John Hoffman has recalled how season 3 guest star Jesse Williams reacted to the Grey's Anatomy joke in episode three.

The actor is best known for playing Jackson Avery in the hit medical show, but is currently appearing as documentarian Tobert in the latest Disney+ series.

In episode 3, which dropped yesterday (August 15), Williams' former show was given a shoutout by Meryl Streep's Loretta, with the Only Murders writers making a joke about Grey's Anatomy bosses' penchant for a spin-off series.

With the future of Oliver Putnam (Martin Short)'s Death Rattle Broadway production still uncertain (following the untimely death of Paul Rudd's Ben Glenroy), Loretta announces that she's landed a new audition.

"It’s an offshoot of an offshoot of a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff," she tells Oliver, revealing that she's auditioning for a role in Grey’s New Orleans: Family Burn Unit.

"It’s for the mother of a dermatologist, so she has a backstory. And lines!" Loretta adds of the part. "And the producers said they might give her a limp, so… it’s juicy!"

According to Only Murders show boss John Hoffman, Williams took the Grey's Anatomy joke well.

"Jesse was very sweet about that,” he told TVLine. "He was howling [during our Zoom table read] about the reference.

"And it’s a real homage," Hoffman continued. "I mean, has there been a more successful show than Grey’s Anatomy? What a windfall for an actress [like Loretta] to have that opportunity…. Watching Meryl Streep get excited about that for herself is just a dream."

Later in the episode, viewers learn that Loretta has successfully won the part, but a disgruntled Oliver tells her she can't accept the role as she's bound to her Death Rattle contract.

The two later come to an agreement, whereby Oliver will let her go if she performs a Death Rattle musical song in front of producers Donna DeMayo (Linda Emond) and her son Cliff (Wesley Taylor), and convince them to fund the production.

Loretta delivers her end of the deal - and then decides to stay for Death Rattle after all.

While Loretta won't be appearing in Grey’s New Orleans: Family Burn Unit anytime soon, it's not the first time audiences will hear about the fictional Greys Anatomy spin-off.

"More to come on that one," Hoffman teased to TVLine. "Hang tight."
