Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has reported a big opening weekend at the US box office.

As reported by Variety, the Marvel threequel took $114 million in its domestic box office debut, but despite this impressive figure, it slightly missed its expectation of $120 million on its opening weekend.

This is considerably lower than The Super Mario Bros Movie which took an impressive $146 million at the US box office during the same weekend and has been breaking record after record since its release last month.

It's even smashed through Frozen II's record and it currently holds the title for the biggest US openings of 2023 to date. Not bad at all.

The new Marvel outing has also taken considerably less at the box office than its 2017 predecessor, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, which took $146 million in its opening weekend.

With James Gunn off to lead DC's new era, it looks like the Guardians universe has been parked for now, but fans would love to see a fourth Guardians movie at some point in the future.

With the movie's excellent reviews and a not-so-terrible opening weekend, there was some controversy as it features the first official F-word in the MCU, during a comedic scene between Gillan's character Nebula and Chris Pratt's Peter Quill/Star-Lord.

Gillan previously told Collider that she didn't even notice the significance at the time, saying: "It's so funny that they would use it. It feels like a monumental thing and it is used in the most throwaway setting.

"I didn't notice that [Chris] said it until someone said, ‘Oh, that's the first F-bomb in MCU history,' and I was like, 'Really?'

"I didn't actually even hear it because, I guess, I'm Scottish and hear a lot of swearing all the time," she joked.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is released in UK cinemas on May 3 and in US cinemas on May 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
