The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) has issued three broad guidelines on the use of the name or image or likeness of the late Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first prime minister.

Ahead of the first anniversary of Lee’s death on 23 March, the MCCY said that various individuals and organisations have come forward to commemorate him in different ways, according to media reports.

Among the guidelines, Lee’s name or image or likeness should not be used for commercial purposes or for any endorsement of products and services.

Lee’s name or image or likeness may be used for “purposes of identifying with the nation, including on works of art or publications or items for charitable purposes, in accordance with law”. His name or image or likeness should be given dignity and respect.

The MCCY said that it will continue to monitor the use of Lee’s name or image. It did not list out any penalty should the guidelines be flouted.
