Halsey says they're 'lucky to be alive,' drops new single about private health battle

The singer previously opened up about being disgnosed with endometriosis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, MCAS, and POTS.

On the heels of releasing new music, Halsey is getting candid about their private health battle.

"long story short, i’m Lucky to be alive,” the singer-songwriter captioned a Tuesday Instagram post. “short story long, i wrote an album. it begins with The End. out now.”

The post also features a series of videos and images of Halsey — who uses she/they pronouns — in treatment. Though they do not specifically state their diagnosis, the caption tagged both The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Lupus Research Alliance.

Representatives for Halsey did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment.

In the first video, the “Bad at Love” singer is seen massaging her legs as she says, "I feel like an old lady.”

Speaking to somebody off-camera, she then adds, “I told myself I’m giving myself two more years to be sick. At 30, I’m having a rebirth, and I’m not going to be sick, and I’m going to look super hot and have lots of energy and I’m just going to get to redo my twenties in my thirties.”

Subsequent footage sees Halsey tearfully filming from a hospital bed, getting tests done, and strumming a guitar. A snippet of their new single can be heard at the tail end of the final video.

Outside of the social media post, Halsey also addressed their health struggles in the new acoustic guitar ballad, "The End." In the opening verse, they sing, “Every couple of years now, a doctor says I’m sick / Pulls out a brand new bag of tricks / And then they lay it on me / And at first, it was my brain, then a skeleton in pain.”

After a later verse reference "poison" in their brain, the song concludes with Halsey singing, "When I met you, I said I would never die / But the joke was always mine 'cause I'm racing against time / And I know it's not the end of the world, but could you pick me up at 8? / 'Cause my treatment starts today."

This isn’t the first time Halsey has opened up about their private health struggles. The singer has previously discussed their struggles with bipolar disorder and in 2016, also shared their endometriosis diagnosis. In 2022, Halsey shared on Instagram that they had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome — known as MCAS — and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, known as POTS.

"I’ve learned that if I want to speak about something going on in my life, to make the narrative positive rather than negative,” Halsey told EW in 2017. “So rather than being like, ‘My life sucks because I had to have surgery for my endometriosis,’ [I should] be like, ‘Hey, guys, I’m recovering from my surgery, and how cool is it that I still get to be a performer?’”
