The Trouble with Maggie Cole, the ITV drama starring Happy Valley's Julie Hesmondhalgh, has found a new lease of life after being added to Netflix.

The 2020 series followed the titular character (Dawn French), described as a busybody, in the village of Thurlbury as she reckons with her own characteristics whilst confronting some of the other villagers.

After concluding in April 2020 with its sixth and final episode, the series was recently added to the streaming service and has proved to be a hit with audiences thus far, with the comedy-drama currently at #10 in Netflix's trending charts.

In addition to Dawn and Julie, the show also stars Mark Heap, Vicki Pepperdine, Patrick Robinson, Phil Dunster and Gwyneth Keyworth. The series was written by Mark Brotherhood, with filming taking place in Devon and Cornwall.

"Self-important Maggie has spilt the beans, drunkenly, on local radio about six village characters with secrets, and is thus racked with guilt for her pointless gossip. But she somehow seems to have hit a seam of truth about at least two or three, and thus the stage is set for confrontations and reckoning," reads the synopsis.

Julie, who played Jill Wheadon in the series, remains best known for her long-running part as Hayley Cropper on Coronation Street, which she left in 2014. Since then, the actor has had roles in Broadchurch and Happy Valley series two.

The BBC drama concluded last year with its third series, though creator Sally Wainwright will soon have a new series to unveil as Riot Women - formerly known as Hot Flush - will premiere later this year.

The drama will follow five members of a punk band as they go through menopause, with Sally teasing: "They're angry and they're going to sing about being angry and being of a certain age and all the stuff that goes with being of a certain age."
