Heartstopper costume designer shares how season 2 Paris trip changes Elle and Imogen

Heartstopper season 2 spoilers follow.

Heartstopper costume designer Adam Dee has shared how the trip to Paris has changed both Elle Argent and Imogen Heaney.

The coming-of-age series returned to Netflix last month with its second season, with the fourth episode seeing the students of Truham School head to the capital of France.

As part of Digital Spy’s Costume is Character series, Dee spoke exclusively with us about how the field trip led to changes for Elle and Imogen, who are played by Yasmin Finney and Rhea Norwood respectively.

“There’s that element we all do where you curate your best outfits and just want to look amazing,” said Dee. “Characters like Elle and Imogen are going to go for that more than someone like Charlie [Spring].

“When we started the season and you look at where their personal growth is, [director] Euros [Lyn] and I said that experience in Paris has to grow them slightly. The coach journey there and back were kind of like these bookends to what happens after Paris.

“They appear older at the queer exhibition, so throughout Paris you had to see that exploration of each of their styles a bit more to see how they get to that point,” he explained, before outlining how each character has grown since the beginning of the show.

“In the first season, Elle is trying to hide a bit. Obviously as she gets stronger in her character and she meets lesbians Tara and Darcy – she grows and grows,” said Dee.

“By this point, in Paris, she’s had the interview to go to art school and meets all these characters who are more expressive about themselves. When she goes to Paris, she has this love for 1970s and vintage clothing – that’s something we [also] did with Imogen.”

Whilst Dee noted how Elle and Imogen have found their own style, the costume designer also revealed that figuring out the look for Kit Connor’s Nick Nelson posed a challenge.

“[We were] trying to resemble things in the book, but also what Kit brings to the character,” he revealed. [We were] changing it slightly so that it feels real. From 2D in the book, you're trying to create something real. It doesn't always translate in the way it does in the drawings.”

Heartstopper seasons 1-2 are available to stream on Netflix.
