Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman has spoken out about the possibility of expanding the world they created in the original webcomic and subsequent TV adaptation.

The British coming-of-age drama became an instant hit with Netflix viewers when it launched on the streaming platform last year, with Joe Locke and Kit Connor playing opposite each other as romantic leads.

While a second season has already been confirmed, some fans have been wondering about the possibility of Heartstopper becoming a franchise with spin-offs in the future.

However, Oseman confessed they currently have no plans to head down that route.

Chatting about the popularity of Heartstopper in a recent interview, Oseman insisted there won’t be any spin-offs on the horizon.

"I don’t want [Heartstopper] to become a franchise," they explained to Attitude. "I don’t want to make things just to make money. The integrity of the story is important to me."

Reflecting on how the success of the webseries and TV show has also brought along some critics, Oseman revealed they've "learnt to shut out a lot of criticism".

"Heartstopper is about two characters I care about so deeply," they said. "I didn’t write it with an agenda.

"I wanted to tell a story, and it blew up. You’re never going to please everyone, and if people are mad about it, you don’t have to read Heartstopper!"

While there’s currently no official release date for Heartstopper season two, fans of the romantic comedy-drama shouldn’t have too long to wait as Netflix confirmed in December 2022 that filming on the new episodes had already wrapped.

The streaming giant has also already commissioned a third season of the hit show, so fans can expect to see more from the beloved Nick and Charlie in the future.

Heartstopper is streaming on Netflix. Seasons 2 and 3 have been confirmed.
