Heartstopper director Euros Lyn has teased a deeper journey for Isaac Henderson beyond the second season.

The coming-of-age series returned to Netflix earlier this week for season 2, continuing the story of the pupils at Truham School and nearby Higgs School.

The second season has seen the continued exploration of Isaac's (Tobie Donovan) asexuality and aromanticism, with Lyn explaining the character's journey in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy.

"I think it's a trick, because it's an internal journey for Isaac – he doesn't discuss it with anyone," said Lyn. "Telling a dramatic story about something that goes on in a character's head is a challenge; but [creator] Alice [Oseman] had come up with this really clever idea.

"[In it] Isaac goes to an art gallery, and he sees a piece of art, an installation – he doesn't know why, but he's drawn to it. Next to him happens to be the artist and he kind of goes, 'Oh, what's the art about?' And the artist says, 'It's about being aromantic and asexual'.

"Isaac kind of goes, 'Oh, I get it. I understand this art, because something about this state, this identity, speaks to me', which I think is an epiphany on his journey," Lyn, who has previously worked on Doctor Who and Sherlock, added.

He also praised Donovan for his performance and the way he highlighted Isaac's vulnerability.

"It was really great to shoot with Tobie, because he plays it with such vulnerability," said Lyn. "For Isaac, discovering this isn't the answer to all his questions; discovering this new identity is the beginning of a much more complicated journey that he'll go on in the future."

While the Heartstopper team are currently planning for the third season, Sebastian Croft will not be a part of future instalments, with the actor confirming his exit as Ben Hope following the conclusion of season two.

Heartstopper seasons 1-2 are streaming on Netflix.
