Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney has teased "challenges" to come for her character Elle Argent in season 2 of the show.

The Netflix series is due to make its anticipated return next month, and it looks like fan-favourite Elle will experience "a lot of emotions" in regards to her relationships and school life, which will lead her to "crack a bit".

"Elle goes through a lot of challenges, not only with having to decide what she wants to do at the end of the school year, but also just her relationship with Tao and figuring out where she wants to be," the Doctor Who star told press ahead of the season's release.

"It's hard because you're in the academic system and you're thrusted into this world of choosing your path. Elle knows what she wants to do, but it's at the expense of other things like friendships. It's really tough, that fight or flight mode, where you're just like, 'What do I do?' I think she's overwhelmed."

Further teasing the emotions she will go through, Finney noted that Elle is "just so loving and she's so caring" and "cares too much", which will lead her to be somewhat overwhelmed.

"She cares about what everybody thinks about her," she elaborated. "She cares about Tao too. She cares about her results. She just cares about everything way too much.

"This season, you sort of see Elle crack a little bit, and I think that's good, because as nice as it is to see Elle being happy and la-di-da, it's also nice to see realism and a little bit of, 'No, actually, I'm overwhelmed and I'm angry and I'm upset and I'm all of these things that I can be.'"

The star added that she's "really proud of Elle this season", revealing: "I really put blood, sweat and tears into her so I hope it pays off. I just want it to reach out to all the people that can relate in that sense. She just goes through so much."

Ahead of season 2's release, Digital Spy said the new episodes are "just as good – if not better" than the first season in our five star review.

Heartstopper is streaming on Netflix, where season 2 will premiere on August 3.
