Henry Winkler evacuated from hotel room after mistaking fire alarm for a radio: 'An amazing adventure'

"Firemen are some of my favorite human beings," the actor said after the incident.

Henry Winkler is heaping some serious pr-aayyyyyyy-ise on the Dublin Fire Brigade after having to evacuate his hotel room because of a fire on Wednesday morning.

The Happy Days actor, 78, likely gave on-scene reporters the surprise of their lives when he stopped to speak with them about the incident, which took place at the Shelbourne hotel near the town’s city center. RTÉ News reports that the brigade quickly contained the blaze, which they believe started on the hotel’s roof space, and there were no sustained injuries.

“When I heard the fire alarm, I thought it was the clock radio – I thought somebody had set the alarm before we got there, like another guest,” Winkler explained. “Finally, I went into another room and it was still buzzing, so I called downstairs and the woman said, in a very calm voice, ‘Yes, we’re all evacuating, you must evacuate right now!’ And I left.”

He also voiced his support for the firefighters who stepped in and handled the situation. “You know what? How wonderful! Firemen are some of my favorite human beings – firemen and firewomen,” he said. “They run in when other people are running out. I think they deserve to be shook [by the hand].”

The actor, who is reportedly in Dublin to promote his 2023 memoir Being Henry: The Fonz . . . and Beyond, noted that this is just another surprise on his whirlwind travels as of late.

“We came last night, our plane was delayed in London for about three and a half hours. This morning we got up and evacuated!” he said. “It was an amazing adventure right here in Dublin. I cannot wait to see the rest of Dublin.”

Winkler also shouted out the fire brigade on social media, posting a selfie with three firemen on his X (formerly Twitter) account. He captioned the post, “Thank you Dublin ‘s fire department … our hotel was evacuated on our first morning !!!”

This isn't the first time Winkler became a surprise guest during a televised interview. He previously found himself weighing in on plans to expand London's Heathrow Airport as part of a BBC News poll back in 2013.

“Im not a resident. I’m [living here temporarily]," Winkler, who was playing Captain Hook in a pantomime production, explained at the time. "It’s hard to commute when you’re doing two shows a day.”
