What is a ‘this is her’ photo?

Gen Z and millennial creators are sharing what’s been dubbed their “this is her” photos on TikTok.

On July 14, Jackie Li (@jackieli852), a creator based in Honolulu, posted a video regarding a recent photo that had been taken of her.

“I’ve never had a ‘this is her’ photo until now,” Li says. “Not that it matters because I don’t have a partner who would need a ‘this is her’ photo, but I was doing a little photo shoot with my friend on his film camera. This is one of the very last shots he got on his roll before he packed up for the day.”

A “this is her” photo is essentially what it sounds like — it’s the go-to photo that one’s significant other pulls up when asked about their partner. In addition to typically capturing that person at their most confident, a “this is her” photo also reflects their true essence.

In the photo, Li is seen standing in front of a busy intersection in a floral dress.

“I love it so much,” she adds.

Distinguishing one’s “this is her” photo isn’t an entirely new concept, though. In 2022, a similar trend gained traction on the social media platform that consisted of creators sharing what’s been referred to as “the” photo.

“What makes ‘the’ photo the photo is in the eye of the beholder,” reported Bustle. “Some users post glow-ups, while others post pictures that most accurately portray their vibe, spirit, essence, which is sometimes a casual couch pic, or a messy, makeup-free candid.”

“The” photo, like a “this is her” photo, in part takes into consideration the public’s opinion of us.

“We start to perceive ourselves the way we think others are perceiving us,” Taylor Seegmiller, a licensed master social worker and body image therapist based in New York City, told Self of the power of a photograph. There’s a “semblance of permanency” with a photo, given that it “captures a still moment in time.”

According to a study conducted at the University of California, Irvine, taking selfies may also have the ability to boost one’s confidence.

“Our research showed that practicing exercises that can promote happiness via smartphone picture-taking and sharing can lead to increased positive feelings for those who engage in it,” explained Yu Chen, a postdoctoral scholar at the university’s Department of Informatics. “This is particularly useful information for returning college students to be aware of, since they face many sources of pressure.”

‘You can have a ‘this is me’ photo’

Several TikTok users are complimenting the way Li looks in the film photo. One creator even suggested Li refer to it as her “this is me” photo instead.

“It’s got ‘the one that got away’ vibes, you’re BEAUTIFUL,” @kiheaux wrote.

“look at youuuuu ugh i would be so proud to show someone this picture,” @londonlikethecountry replied.

“You can a have a ‘this is me’ photo tho so prettyyyy,” @catalackkkk wrote, to which Li commented, “TRUEEE.”

Twenty-one-year-old Nora Elhamri (@noraelhamrii), a tattoo artist based in Berlin, posted her “this is her” photo in late June.

In late May, Kim Mann (@kimmmann_) shared her “updated” “this is her” picture.

That same month, Emma (@selfobsessedleo) revealed a few of her “this is her” photos too.
