Here’s the Real Question: Will ‘Horizon’ Stream Before ‘Yellowstone’ S5’s Debut?

When Is Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Streaming?

Stop me if you’ve heard this long saga already: Kevin Costner played John Dutton in Yellowstone for about a half decade, then reportedly beefed (with creator Taylor Sheridan) his way out of the series. Now he’s starring in and directing his own western drama—a multi-part project called Horizon: An American Saga.

For those of you who are catching up, Horizon and Yellowstone have a similar vibe. Both projects are about western settlers. The difference? Yellowstone is about the New West, and Horizon is about the Old West. Horizon takes place over twelve years, beginning in 1859, right before the Civil War. The official description says the film “explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many.”

Horizon premiered on June 28 to mixed reviews. If you want to judge for yourself, you can still see the film in theaters. If you don’t want to pay for a ticket, you can wait for Horizon’s streaming debut. The film is distributed by Warner Bros., which means it should eventually land on Max. We’ll keep you posted on the release date. For now, it seems like Costner would rather you see his movie the old-fashioned way.

It makes sense, seeing that Horizon is a four-part series. That kind of grandiosity requires a big screen. According to Deadline, Chapter 2 will premiere on August 16. Meanwhile, Costner is working hard to crank out Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. He has reportedly invested $98 million in the series. After Horizon premiered at the 2024 Cannes Festival, Costner told Deadline that he tried to crowdsource some cash. “I’m trying to make the third one,” he said. “I knocked on every boat in Cannes to help me. The guys say, ‘C’mon, we’ll get a picture.’ I said. ‘No, get your checkbook out.’ ”

The man has guts, I’ll say that! While we wait to see how this plays out, you can catch Costner in theaters or…on Yellowstone reruns.
