Did Player 287/Mai, Player 451/Phill, or Player 16/Sam walk away with $4.56 million in the finale?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of Squid Game: The Challenge.

The winner of Squid Game: The Challenge has finally been revealed! And it all came down to an intense game of Rock, Paper, Scissors on Netflix's Squid Game reality spinoff.

Mai, Phill, and Sam

Just like in the scripted drama's ending, the three finalists, Player 287/Mai, Player 451/Phill, and Player 16/Sam, receive their custom tuxedoes and sit down for a candlelit steak dinner at a giant triangle table. Phill jokes they have to stab each other, and Sam seriously agrees, to which Phill replies that they agreed no stabbing. "I didn't agree to anything," Sam coldly says, which shocks Mai as she realizes he's shutting down his emotions to prepare to win against his own friend Phill.

The dinner starts off friendly as each finalist tells their life story, but the good vibes end when an announcement reveals only two of them will proceed to the final game. They must play a random game of chance where players choose one of three buttons to push — if it turns green, it means they move on to the final game and pick who else moves on with them. Gray has no consequence, and red means they're eliminated. The players have to decide who pushes a button first, and Mai steps up but gets gray. Sam decides he'll go next, and he gets red, which means he's immediately out.

Mai and Phill move on to the final game, which looks like it's going to be Squid Game based on the markings on the ground ... but it's actually Rock, Paper, Scissors. What an anticlimactic way to end this competition! The winner of each round picks a key from a box to try to open the safe, and if it's the correct key, they win the whole thing. If the key doesn't open the safe, they play again.

In the first round, Phill picks rock and Mai picks paper. Mai selects a key from the box but it doesn't work. In the second round, Phil picks rock and Mai picks scissors, so he tries out a key but it doesn't work. They both choose scissors in the third round, then Mai wins the fourth round with paper but her key doesn't work. This continues for many, many more rounds, where Mai wins more than Phill does. Ultimately, it comes down to Mai picking the right key, and she opens the safe to get her golden credit card containing $4.56 million and securing her win.

And with that, the first season of Squid Game: The Challenge has finished! Be sure to check back here on Thursday as EW speaks with the winner and both runner-ups about everything that went down in the finale.
