A Texas high school basketball player has been arrested on assault charges after allegedly attacking his coach who benched him, police say.

The incident happened on Dec. 5 in the parking lot at Willis High School in Conroe, according to a press release from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office on Friday.

Police said the coach claimed he was “assaulted by several individuals,” including a 17-year-old student, per the release.

According to the coach, the student was benched during a game between Willis and Conroe High School earlier in the evening due to his behavior toward a player on the opposing team.

Following the game, the student and his family then approached the coach in the parking lot and confronted him.

“They began a verbal confrontation, which led to [the student] punching the victim in the face,” the release continued, further alleging that the student’s 22-year-old brother also began assaulting the coach during the incident.

The alleged assault was also witnessed by another coach who attempted to intervene, along with other individuals, according to the release.

Police alleged both brothers fled the scene following the incident, but they were later located and placed under arrest on charges of assault on a public servant.

The brothers were transported to the Montgomery County Jail, per the release. They have since been released after posting a $23,000 bond each. It's not immediately clear if either suspect has a lawyer.

Authorities said the coach was left with injuries to his head, neck, face and arms as a result of the assault.

The investigation into the assault is ongoing, according to ABC News.
