Hillary & Chelsea Clinton EP’d Irish Oscar Entry ‘In The Shadow Of Beirut’ & ‘Sirocco And The Kingdom Of Air Streams’ Head To Saudi Red Sea Film Fest

Garry Keane and Stephen Gerard Kelly’s documentary In The Shadow Of Beirut, which is Ireland’s Oscar category this year, is headed to the Red Sea International Film Festival, running November 30 to December 9 in the Red Sea port of Jeddah.

The work, which is executive produced by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton as well as Siobhan Sinnerton under their HiddenLight Productions banner, is an immersive work capturing life in the slum neighborhoods of Sabra and Shatila neighborhoods outside Beirut, three decades after they hit world headlines following the infamous massacre of 1982.

The documentary is among six titles selected for the New Vision line-up alongside Jurgen Buedts and Sahim Omar Kalifa biodoc The Iraq’s Invisible Beauty about Iraqi photographer Latif Al Ani, which world premieres at the Red Sea, and Thien An Pham’s first feature Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell which won Camera d’Or at Cannes this year. “We hold a special attachment to the Red Sea: New Vision section. These are our cinematic favorites—films with a different, creative, original, and, above all, unique cinematographic language,” said Antoine Khalife, Director of Arab Programs & Film Classics at the festival.

“Filmmakers delve into strong themes, whether it’s the quest for a new country, the lost beauty of a country, the struggle of women for an independent and robust country, or the revolution in a country led by its young citizens for a brighter future.”

The festival also unveiled its Red Sea: Series sidebar showcasing four new shows: Ashfaq Carim and Gokhan Deniz’s culinary docu-series South Africa Eats; Iranian director Nima Javidi’s Shakespeare-inspired The Actor; Auckland-set drama Miles From Nowhere by Ghazaleh Golbakhsh, and Korean thriller The Deal from Lee Jung-Gon.

In further announcements, it was also revealed that Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget would play in the Red Sea’s Families and Children strand.

That line-up features five family-oriented films including the world premiere of Swiss filmmaker Damien Hauser’s Kenya-set fable After the Long Rains (Baada Ya Masika) as well as Annecy titles Saleem by Jordanian director Cynthia Sharaihay and Sirocco And The Kingdom Of Air Streams, which opened the French lakeside animation festival this year.

“It is crucial, both for us and the children, to show how to tolerate, be open, and to foster an understanding of and acceptance of everyone’s differences. The Red Sea Film Festival is a home for both the young and old alike, through all the films selected, to create a space of integration, complicity, and openness,” said Kaleem Aftab, Director of International Programming.

The announced films join another 60 titles that have been unveiled over the past three weeks, as the festival programming team has navigated the shifting sands of the Israel-Hamas conflict and the ending of the Actors’ Strike. More news on the line-up can be found here.
