Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks has aired emotional scenes for Charlie Dean in his ongoing struggle with his mental health.

The teenager has been suffering from anxiety in recent weeks, stemming from his relationship with Shing Lin and his underwhelming GCSE results.

After attempting to barricade himself in his room, his relationship with stepfather Darren has become strained, with the dark lyrics pinned to his bedroom walls increasing the tension between the pair.

In tonight’s (September 4) first-look episode, the aftermath of the latest incident saw the pair continue to argue, with Darren saying they would pick the matter up after Charlie returned from school.

Charlie didn't make it to school, with his anxiety sending him into a dazed state as he wandered through the village. With Goldie and Hunter asking if he was okay, Charlie could only hear one repeating question: “Why are you here?”

While Darren searched for Charlie to no avail, the teenager made his way to the beach, texting Shing Lin to tell her that she was “beautiful” along with a photo of the lighthouse. She subsequently rushed to Darren to inform her of his location, with Darren hastily grabbing her phone.

The father and son shared an emotional phone call, with Charlie reminiscing about memories that they shared at the beach. As he hung up, Darren and Tony rushed to the beach to find him, with a nervous Shing Lin pleading to come.

When they arrived, they found Charlie swimming out to sea as he replayed his childhood in his mind. The pair managed to haul Charlie back to land, with the camera panning back to reveal the message he had left for them on the beach: “I'm sorry”.

The credits rolled as the trio lay down on the beach, with Charlie being reminded that plenty of people care for him. Will this be a breakthrough moment for him?
