Hollyoaks said goodbye to fan-favourite character this week, as Tamara Wall's Grace Black was sent to prison after taking all the blame for the heist she tried to commit with Cindy Cunningham, Zara Morgan and Damon Kinsella.

The soap made it clear that it's an exit for the character, removing her from the opening titles and tweeting out a goodbye.

"She's an absolute LEGEND! It's time to say goodbye to the one, the only, Grace Black!" the tweet read. "We can't even begin to explain the times we've had with gangster Grace over the years, but what we can explain is how thankful we are to Tam for bringing Grace to our screens!"

In so many of these cases, getting rid of fan-favourite character runs the risk of riling up fans. In this case, viewers and even the soap's own stars have tweeted in droves about how upset they are, and how they think the show has made a mistake in writing Grace out.

Even former Hollyoaks actor Duncan James shared his disappointment on Twitter, writing: "Totally sad. Would [have] loved to [have] seen my mates [Tamara Wall] and [Rita Simons] in the same scene."

The actor and singer was referring to former EastEnders star Rita Simons joining the Channel 4 soap.

And fans clearly shared his disappointment, with plenty posting their thoughts on social media. Take a look at what some said:

As far as Tamara Wall herself is concerned, she admitted that it wasn't her decision to leave and she was incredibly upset when she was told the news.

"It's absolutely devastating," she told OK! Magazine. "When I got told, I bawled my eyes out for three days, I was so upset – it's been the best time of my life.

"It wasn't my decision, but I understand. It's the name of the game, and Grace was going to get her comeuppance at some point. In the end, she probably deserved it. But I'm sure she'll find her way out eventually, she'll be back."

The actress did admit that it is "nice to know you'll be missed", and is glad her character wasn't killed off as that can leave the door open.

Could this strong reaction from fans mean that Grace will come back sooner rather than later?
