Hollyoaks has confirmed who former EastEnders star Rita Simons will be playing on the Channel 4 soap.

Simons, who played Roxy Mitchell on the BBC soap until being killed off in 2017, announced in July that she would be joining Hollyoaks, but news on her role remained scarce in the ensuing months.

The details have now finally been released courtesy of a post-credits trailer following tonight’s (January 15) first-look episode, with the star playing Joel Dexter’s mother Marie.

The press release for Marie teases that she will cause “quite a stir” following her release from prison, with her first port of call in the village being the McQueen household as she steals Mercedes’ red dress from the washing line.

“Marie’s got a lot of ties here, so I think there’s going to be quite a lot of trouble between quite a few characters, and you will just have to keep watching to see…” said Simons of her character in a statement.

Simons’ introduction to Hollyoaks comes as the soap welcomes back two familiar faces, with Emma Rigby and Charlie Clapham set to reprise their roles as Hannah Ashworth and Freddie Roscoe respectively.

Clapham, who was last seen on the soap in 2017, recently spoke with Digital Spy ahead of his return, saying: “I feel very grateful and really excited. I loved working here before. It was a huge part of my life in my early 20s and I did a lot of growing up at the time.

“From what I've read and heard, Freddie is as glorious and flawed as he was before. It's going to be great to play that out. It just makes any interaction that Freddie has with older characters great as there's a history there, and it's brilliant with the new characters too.”

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
