Hollyoaks' John Paul McQueen made a huge mistake in tonight's (September 20) first-look episode.

The latest instalment of the soap, which was written by Scott Drinkwell actor Ross Adams, opened with John Paul walking in on a tense confrontation between mysterious newcomer Carter Shepherd and a man named Billy, who had caught John Paul's eye.

Billy left before things got physical, which left Carter to tell John Paul that he deserved someone better, and apologised if the altercation left him feeling triggered following his recent homophobic attack.

Later, John Paul attended The Dog's bingo night, hosted by Scott, who was dressed in Cher drag. At the bar, it didn't take Carter long to get inside John Paul's head, stating that Scott's drag makes him "a target for the wrong kind of people".

"I'm not saying it's right, but it does seem unfair that you were attacked, when you're nothing like that," he said.

Back at the table, John Paul couldn't stop looking at a group of lads sat nearby, and started having flashbacks to the night he was attacked. He started sweating and made his way outside for some air, while Carter watched on intensely.

Outdoors, John Paul was having a panic attack when Carter approached from behind and put his hand on John Paul's shoulder. Not knowing who it was, John Paul turned around and punched Carter, knocking him to the ground... right in front of Zoe Anderson. He was promptly arrested and forced to spend the night in a cell.

At the hospital, Carter was told that his injuries were serious, although he discharged himself against Sharon Bailey's advice, but she did tell him to give Zoe a statement if he wanted to press charges.

Instead, he called up an unknown person and said "I think there's someone you and I need to sort out".

Just what is Carter up to?

From Monday, September 25, Hollyoaks will stream first online via Channel 4 each weekday. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.
