Hollyoaks' John Paul McQueen rocked by surprise character return

John Paul McQueen's past will come back to haunt him in new scenes of Hollyoaks.

The former teacher, played by James Sutton, will come face to face with his mistakes when Freya Calder, portrayed by Ellie Henry, returns to the village next week.

Last year, Freya was left with life-altering injuries in a minibus crash with John Paul behind the wheel. Now, she's back to Hollyoaks High in time for prom and seems intent on getting closer to the McQueens.

In upcoming episodes, Freya will attend a summer art class led by Hunter, who's impressed by the girl's talent. When he brings a picture painted by Freya home with him, a chat with John Paul and Nana McQueen makes him realise she's the student who was injured in the minibus accident.

Learning that Freya is in Hunter's art class, John Paul encourages him to continue with his course so that she may have an outlet to process the traumatic events she's been through.

Fans of the Channel 4 soap will recall that the connections between Freya and the McQueens don't stop at the minibus crash. Not long after the accident, Freya's mum, DI Lexi Calder, met an untimely death at the hands of serial killer Silas Blisset in his final showdown with the McQueens. (Silas was then killed by his grandson Bobby Costello, currently behind bars.)

"I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to Hollyoaks! Last year saw a lot of life-changing events for Freya," Henry said of her return to the soap.

"She is now navigating life as a disabled young person without her mum, which gives us so much to explore. She's also had a little transformation in the time she's been away, which is exciting," she added.

"We have so much coming up this year that I cannot wait for people to see!"

And a new arrival to Hollyoaks ties in with Freya's more prominent role. Holby City star David Ames was previously announced to join the soap as Carter Shepherd, the new head of Hollyoaks High and Freya's father.

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
