Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks star Owen Warner has opened up about filming a tough storyline with real-life girlfriend Jemma Donovan.

Owen's character on the soap, Romeo Nightingale, is currently involved in a romantic relationship with influencer Rayne Royce, who is played by his actual girlfriend Jemma.

Fans of the soap will know that Romeo is being coercively controlled by his girlfriend as part of their ongoing storyline which explores toxic relationships.

Speaking to Inside Soap about dating his co-star, Owen said it's easy for the couple to switch off once they are home because they are so different from the characters they play.

"Because we are both so different to the roles we play, it makes it easy. Jemma is such a lovely girl and I don't attach her to Rayne," he admitted.

While the pair don't closely associate with their characters, Owen said they often discuss how to treat being part of such a serious storyline with sensitivity.

"We have to treat this storyline with sensitivity and care," Owen said. "So it's nice to do it with someone I'm close to; we're always talking about how to play it, and how we felt in certain scenes. I think that really helps."

In scenes set to air next week, Rayne's career will take off as The Traitors star Maddy Smedley appears on the soap as talent agent Faye Fuller.

Discussing Faye's role, Owen said: "Faye is the embodiment of this influencer world: ruthless, cut-throat and all about what's going to get the most views online.

"She is an extreme version of Rayne, who wants to impress Faye and does whatever she says with no thought of how it affects those around her. Then Romeo is trying to please Rayne and go along with whatever she wants. It's a dangerous mix."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.
