Hollyoaks star Alex Fletcher has confirmed a huge stunt that is set to air in the new year.

Fletcher has played Diane Hutchinson on the Channel 4 soap since 2010, and spoke exclusively with Digital Spy about the upcoming developments on the show.

The soap has a tradition of airing an hour-long episode in January, and this looks set to continue via a large stunt, with Fletcher confirming that several characters would be involved.

“For the people involved in that stunt, it's going to go in different directions,” she told us. “What is amazing is that it links everybody in, it'll be different stories and it opens up different cans of worms all over the shop.

“There is almost too much going on to be honest, but it's brilliant. We had a chat last night with our producer, and I was like, 'Are you joking? Really?' She was saying, 'We've got this and this and this' and it's just so exciting.”

Fletcher also spoke about other developments on the soap, which saw the roles of her on-screen children – Rose and Ant – recently recast. The young pair will take centre stage next week as Rose goes missing, with Fletcher promising drama for the family.

“This is the start of more heartbreaking things to come,” she teased. “We've got a massive story that we're going to be telling and I genuinely can't wait. I think I've got a lot to learn about myself as an actress, and it's going to be a challenge for everyone I think.

“We've never done anything like this before. This story is going to be a slow burn and I think people are going to invest in Rose's character. She's just gorgeous and I think when the audience see what she's going to go through, they're going to really feel it with her.”

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
