Hollyoaks star Kieron Richardson calls for darker side to Ste Hay

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks star Kieron Richardson has called for his character, Ste Hay, to show his darker side in upcoming weeks.

Ste has had a hectic few months, with his downward spiral starting after he discovered that he was responsible for the death of Ella Richardson in a car accident.

After confiding in husband James Nightingale about his crime, solicitor James concocted a plan to frame Kane for Ella's death, with the drug dealer eventually being put behind bars.

The pair thought they were in the clear, but Warren Fox sought to discover the truth about the death of his daughter, and subsequently found out that Ste was actually responsible after speaking with Kane in prison.

Warren eventually confronted Ste, with a showdown resulting in Ste falling from the top of a multi-storey car park, but Richardson has explained his desire for the character's dark side to be shown again.

"It's been fantastic playing nervous and scared since the crash, but I don't want to get stuck into a victim mentality for Ste," he told Inside Soap. "The character has so many layers, I like to change it up.

"If he has more interaction with Warren in the future, I'd like to see Ste toughen up and take on more of a 'Warren' role - don't forget Ste used to be a bit of a bad boy…"

The actor, who has played Ste since 2006, also spoke about the events leading up to the dramatic confrontation, saying he felt the pressure when filming Ste's fall.

"Ste has had a horrendous time keeping this secret, he knows the game is up - but will he be going to prison or is his own life in danger now that Warren knows?" he teased.

"It always takes me a bit of time to get back into the swing of it and I knew we were coming straight back into these big, emotional scenes (after the Christmas break), so I did feel a little bit of pressure."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
