Hollyoaks star Nadine Mulkerrin warns of "red flags" in Cleo relationship

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks star Nadine Mulkerrin has warned of "red flags" in Cleo McQueen's relationship with Abe Fielding.

Cleo recently reappeared in Chester following an 18-month absence, intent on fixing things with her former flame, Joel Dexter.

When it became clear that Joel has moved on with Leela Lomax, viewers learned that Cleo actually has a boyfriend, Abe Fielding, who has followed her to Hollyoaks.

The soap has already hinted that Abe has an obsession with Cleo — and Nadine recently told OK! Magazine that her character is "susceptible" to these types of relationships.

"Abe has a sinister edge to him," Nadine said. "It's one of those stories where the moral is that when you're in the early days of a relationship, don't ignore the red flags. It's a big thing in our generation — to identify toxic, weird behaviour that you justify or ignore.

"Cleo's dealt with abuse, eating disorders. She's had a traumatic childhood. She does have that vulnerable side, and she can be quite susceptible to these kinds of people. I don't know exactly where this storyline is heading, but I’m excited."

Nadine also hinted that Cleo may not truly have moved on from Joel, teasing: "Joel was Cleo's true love — they've been connected for a very long time.

"I think in Cleo's mind, she thought there's still something between them, but Joel is with someone else. Cleo has been gone for two years, so she can't just pick up where she left off."

Previously, Nadine suggested that Cleo may be ignoring important warning signs about Abe's controlling nature since he'd already stalked her social media.

"He's very intense, and the fact he shows up like this is a bit weird," she said.

"It looks as though Cleo is going to be unlucky in love again with him, as he's quite manipulative and coercive, and the kind of person who might isolate her from her family..."
