Hollyoaks star Rory Douglas-Speed has reflected on the "weird" real-life couple scenes he shared with his partner Nadine Mulkerrin.

Playing Joel Dexter on the soap, Rory starred alongside Nadine who played his on-screen partner Cleo McQueen.

Last year, Nadine confirmed her character's exit from the soap permanently after leaving to go on maternity leave when she was expecting her and Rory's second child.

Speaking to Inside Soap, Rory said that although he misses seeing his fiancée at work, he doesn't miss the "weird" crossover in their real-life relationship.

"I miss seeing her at work, but to be honest it got a bit weird. Their relationship was tormented and full-on, and it got a bit much playing this strange, extended version of yourself."

Giving fans an insight into their private life, Rory said that the couple, who got engaged back in 2018, recently enjoyed a romantic getaway to Ibiza sans kids.

"Nadine and I went to Ibiza recently for her 30th, the first time away without our kids [Reggie, three, and one-year old Dougie]. We knew the boys were in good hands and we had the best time."

After leaving the soap last year, Nadine, who starred as Cleo McQueen between 2015 and 2022, told Metro she was looking forward to the next chapter.

"I have been blessed with so many incredible storylines, arriving with the Pete and Cleo storyline, the powerful sexual abuse storyline, and then the impactful bulimia storyline which crescendo'd on my wedding day to my real-life fiancé, meeting Rory, and joining at 21 and leaving eight years later its been an incredibly special job," Nadine said.

"I feel like I will miss everybody so much and it will always have a special place in my heart. I'm ready to close the chapter and move on to the next challenge in my career and I'm just grateful for the brilliant time I’ve had at Hollyoaks."
