Home and Away actress Georgie Parker has explained why she often takes little breaks from the Australian soap.

Parker has been playing Roo Stewart on the soap since 2010, but she takes time off here and there to perform in plays and pantomimes.

Speaking to Australia's TV Week, Parker talked about how she appreciates having the flexibility to do different things in-between Roo's major storylines.

She said: "The writers have to keep writing me out of the show so I can come and go – to do the plays and other little gigs here and there, so I don't envy them having to do that.

"I think it's important, at this time in my career, that I get to explore all the options of working with people I've worked with for 40 years. So I'm very grateful I get the freedom to do both."

Looking back on the last year's storylines for Roo, Parker is very pleased with what she was given.

She said: "I'm very happy with what the writers have managed to give Roo. She's lived a big life, and I've been able to interact with different characters this year, which I've thoroughly enjoyed."

Ray Meagher, who plays Roo's father Alf in the soap, also used to do pantomimes in the United Kingdom. He stopped doing it a few years ago, and he seems to be fine with that decision.

"It's been wonderful to be back having hot Australian Christmases, rather than freezing English ones," he said.

Home and Away returns in January 2024 on Channel 5 in the UK and Channel 7 in Australia. Selected classic episodes are available via Prime Video in the UK.
