Home and Away star Ada Nicodemou has shared her praise for co-star Joshua Hewson in the Andrew storyline.

The soap is currently airing scenes involving the teen, played by newcomer Hewson, as Leah and Justin foster him following the death of his father.

However, viewers have learned a bit about Andrew's past, discovering that his father abducted him when he was four and indoctrinated him as part of the Vita Nova doomsday cult.

Speaking about working with Hewson, Nicodemou told Stuff: “On screen, he’s mesmerising and [when I was] working against him, I just couldn’t stop looking at him.

“It felt like he was Andrew. I really felt I had to nurture him and care about him. Josh did a really good job with the character.”

Nicodemou also opened up a bit about the storyline, saying that Leah and Justin taking Andrew in is a no-brainer: “Once you are faced with having to look after a child who is that badly damaged, how could you turn your back on that? I mean, I know I couldn’t.

“I mean, obviously you would think twice about it, especially if you are Leah and Justin who already have a responsibility to Theo and also to themselves and the town because you are putting everyone in danger.

“However, I don’t think they’re given a choice really. Leah just puts everything into it and totally loves [Andrew] and adores him and really wants to do the right thing by him. She tries to teach him how to read and write properly and really nurtures him.”

The latest twist in the tale has seen a mysterious woman turn up in Summer Bay claiming to be Andrew's mother, convincing him to leave with her – though it later turns out that she is Margot, the leader of the cult, meaning the teen has been kidnapped by the group.

Nicodemou said of Leah and Justin's decision to let Andrew go with this woman, not knowing the truth: “They have really come to love him and he’s part of the family. But the right thing to do, if this is his mum, is let Andrew go and be with her.

“This is a storyline that goes on for quite a while and people are hurt. It’s very, very serious.”
