Hong Kong Police Gather in Causeway Bay Amid Pro-Democracy Demonstrations

People gathered in Hong Kong on June 12 for pro-democracy demonstrations, a year after protesters clashed with police at the city’s Legislative Council in unrest that saw a controversial extradition bill suspended by Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

Tens of thousands of people thronged the streets on June 12 last year, with some protesters entering the Legislative Council building and clashing with police, who responded with tear gas.

Days after the clashes, Lam suspended the bill, which was ultimately abandoned that October. Anti-Beijing protests have continued, however, focused now on a national security law that opponents say erodes democratic freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kongers since the 1997 British handover.

The Hong Kong Police Force said “troubles loom” due to the gatherings in Causeway Bay and Mong Kok. Police said protesters were warned “to stop any unlawful act.”
